The Hydrogen Atom (III)
(?E)atom = h?photon where (?E)atom is the change of energy of the H-atom, and ?photon is the frequency of the photon either absorbed or emitted.
Originally, people thought that the electron circumnavigated the proton (nucleus) the way the earth travels around the Sun and the moon travels around the earth. This view was overthrown in the 1920’s when the quantum mechanical revolution took place.
We now think that the electron’s path can not be specified, and that essentially, the electron exists fractionally in various places in space, described by a mathematical construct known as an orbital.
