Quantum Numbers, Energy Levels and Orbitals (IV)
The fourth (and last) quantum number is ms, the spin quantum number. It has two possible values, often called up or down, +1/2 or -1/2, ? or ?. In a vague way, they correspond to electrons spinning clockwise or counterclockwise on their own axis.
An H atom can be in the 3s state, whereupon its “n” value is 3, its “?” value is zero, and nothing is said about its m? or ms value.
Electron spin was first demonstrated in the Stern-Gerlach experiment
